The Slammy’s ’08
The Slammy’s may sound like another ordinary award ceremony to most adults, but to the Student Ministries it is perhaps the most valued and prized award ceremony out there. The Slammy’s were designed to be a fun way to end the House Church season. Not only were we celebrating individual students, but we were also recognizing the amazing things that God has done in the lives of the students this year. After walking the red carpet in the Activity Center, students were eating Buffalo Wild Wings, taking pictures, and having a great time. The attire for the evening was up for interpretation, as the invite said to “dress to impress.” A large group of teens took this literally and dressed very classy while others strolled into the event wearing creatively ripped shirts, soccer uniforms, street clothes, nerd attire, and creatively assembled outfits. Two senior boys made a grand entrance as they showed up fashionably late wearing gorilla suits and in the midst of a light saber war.
This event was a very special time for the students here at The Crossing. Great food was provided and there was never a dull moment. A few of the awards include: the walking energy drink award, the most likely to pack their bags and move to India award, and the make yourself at home award. You may be asking yourself what the awards looked like this year. In past years the awards took the form of a gold GI Joe or other figurines such as Transformers, but this year was truly special. To a normal person this year's Slammy award may look like a gold painted pony but to the students, that little gold pony is as precious as the air we breathe. Their peers and small group leaders nominated the students for the prestigious awards. The suspenseful atmosphere as the nominees were read was priceless. Along with the presentations of the sought after awards, many performances were made. The students laughed as Jeff Henson, Kyle Reed, and Nate Johnson danced their hearts out on stage to a various arrangement of songs. Later on in the night, Nate and Emily Johnson had the entire room on their feet doing the Cha Cha slide. Kyle Reed even educated the students on how to play a wildly popular game, Bingo.
Perhaps the most anticipated presentation, or announcement, of the night was the winners of the trip to Disneyland. One representative from each house church was called forward and received one key. The person whose key unlocked the golden treasure chest, belonged to the house church that earned the trip to Disneyland. The winner was determined by a point system throughout the house church season. And as the first two keys did not fit, finally the representative from the Warner house was able to get the lock open. Congrats to the Warner house for all their hard work throughout the 2008 house church season.
All who attended will remember the ‘08 Slammy’s for quite some time. If you are going into grades 6 – 12 and were not involved in a house church this past season, I encourage you to get involved next time around and attend the Slammy’s next year. It is an event that no one should miss.
